Linda Lee Harper poetry Reading

The Poetry Society of Georgia would like to invite you to a free Poetry Reading by Linda Lee Harper on Thursday March 10th at 7pm.

Linda Lee Harper lives in Augusta, Georgia, and was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received her BA & MFA in poetry from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
She taught there, University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s Continuing Education
program and at the University of South Carolina-Aiken.

Her work has appeared most recently in: The Georgia Review, Nimrod, The Seneca Review, Rattle, and 85 other journals. Her book “Kiss Kiss” was selected as the winner in
Cleveland State University Poetry Center’s Open Competition for 2007.

The reading will be held at the Trinity Church, 225 West President Street, just across the street from the Jepson Art Center.

From 7pm to 7:30pm we invite local poets to share the stage in an open mic. Vaughnette Goode-Walker will be organizing the session. Harper's reading will begin at 7:30pm.

David Bottoms at the Savannah Book Festival

The Poetry Society of Georgia is proud to sponsor David Bottoms at the Savannah Book Festival 2011!

Bottoms was born in Canton, Georgia in 1949. His first book, Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump, was selected by Robert Penn Warren as the winner of the 1979 Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. He received a fellowship at Florida State University, where he earned his Ph.D. In 1982 he took a teaching position at Georgia State University, and co-founded Five Points, a literary magazine. In 2000, Bottoms was appointed Georgia’s Poet Laureate.
The reading is at the Savannah Book Festival on Saturday February 19th at 3:30pm in the Jepson Boardroom. 121 Barnard St. You can contact us at poetryknows@gmail.com

Jim Snowed in!!

Unfortunately, Jim Warner was unable to make it for the reading of January 27th. But we are trying to reschedule for May! We'll keep you posted.

We did have a great open mic session though! Thanks to all the poets who shared and Tony Morris read for us in Jim's place and a fantastic evening of poetry was concocted regardless of snow in the North! Thank you Tony!

Poetry Out Loud!

It was my pleasure to serve as one of the judges at Savannah Arts Academy for their Poetry Out Loud competition. The contestants were all very talented and put on wonderful performances. The Society has made them all honorary members and can't wait to see more of them on the poetry scene.

Trey Dugas won first place with his performance of Carl Sandburg's I am the People - the Mob and the runner up was Jack Wagner with his performance of Shakespeare's Blow Blow, the Winter Wind.

Thank you SAA for letting the society partake in such an awesome expression of poetry here in Savannah and good luck to Trey as he heads on to the State championships - We're behind you 100%.

Jim Warner is the author of the poetry collection Too Bad It’s Poetry (Paper Kite Press). His poems have appeared in The HazMat Review, mid rib, Hecale, In The Arms of Words: Poetry for Disaster Relief (Sherman-Asher), and elsewhere. He is the Assistant Director of Graduate Creative Writing Programs at Wilkes University.

November Reading

We hope you will come out this Thursday night (the 18th of November) to the Jepson Center for a poetry reading by our guest, Doris Davenport.

Davenport is a performance poet, writer, and Associate Professor of English at Albany State University. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Listen Here: Women Writing in Appalachia; Out of the Rough: Women's Poems of Survival and Celebration; Bloodroot: Reflections on Place by Appalachian Women Writers; and This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color. She has done more than 100 poetry performances and workshops and has taught at several colleges and universities, including Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Davenport received her B.A. in English from Paine College, her M.A. in English from SUNY-Buffalo, and her Ph.D. in African American literature from the University of Southern California. Born and raised in Gainesville and Cornelia, Georgia, in the foothills of Appalachia, she currently lives in Albany, Georgia.

At 7pm we are inviting local poets to take the stage in the auditorium for 20 minutes of open mic and grab the chance to read in an amazing building and connect and share with fellow writers and poets. Davenport's reading begins at 7:30pm, and thanks to The Booklady Bookstore, Davenport's books will be fore sale with a selection of previous poets' work after the reading.

We will also be selling our 'Poetry knows' canvas bags for $10.00 if you want to support the literary arts in Savannah and see the not-for-profit organization, The Poetry Society of Georgia, continue to offer you these services.

Gary Gildner is a nationally recognized poet and writer, whose books include Somewhere Geese are Flying, Blue Like the Heavens,The Second Bridge, and The Warsaw Sparks. He has received the National Magazine Award for Fiction, a Pushcart Prize, the William Carlos Williams and Theodore Roethke poetry prizes; Gary was a Senior Fulbright Lecturer to both Poland and Czechoslovakia. Gildner lives in Idaho’s Clearwater Mountains.

Reading is on October 19th

2010-2011 Reading Series

We are gearing up for our next season and excited about all the possibilities. We will keep you posted on confirmed dates and readers. End of Season

The Society would like to thank everyone who participated in our reading series this year. We had a fantastic time and really enjoyed meeting some new members as well as catching up with long standing ones. A special thanks to all the poets who came to read for us this season and were generous enough to share their work with Savannah. Kelly Whiddon's reading was a wonderful closing to a spectacular season of poetry.

Please keep our Cosmos Mariner contest in mind, $500.00 for the winner and the deadline is not until May 15th. See the older post here for details.

April Reading

We are proud to invite you all to our last reader of the season, Kelly Whiddon, who will be reading for us on April 20th at the Telfair Academy (121 Barnard Street Savannah GA). Kelly completed her Ph.D. at Florida State University. Her interest include creative writing (poetry and fiction), twentieth century American literature, and women's studies.

We hope to see you all there to make our last reading the best so far.

Cosmos Mariner Award $500

Now is the time to enter our Cosmos Mariner Award Poetry Contest!: $500 to the winner. Judge: David Kirby. 3-5 unpublished poems (10 pages max.), postmarked May 15. March Reading!

Join us on Tuesday March 9th at 7pm (6:30 meet and greet for members) for our poetry reading this month. Waqas Khawaja is an Associate Professor of English at Agnes Scott College. His most recent project is an anthology of poems translated into English from Pakistan's seven major languages. He was a practicing lawyer and newspaper columnist in Pakistan before relocating to the US in 1994.

Mark our next reader on your new 2010 calendar! Chad Davidson will be reading at the Telfair Academy (121 Barnard Street) for us on January 19, 2010.
Chad Davidson is the author of The Last Predicta (2008) and Consolation Miracle (2003), winner of the Crab Orchard Prize in Poetry. Otherbooks include: Hockey Haiku: the Essential Collection, Space (chapbook), and Tourist Guide to the Forgotten City (chapbook). His poems have also appeared in several anthologies, including: From the Fishouse: An Anthology of Poems that Sing, Rhyme, Resound, Syncopate, Alliterate, and Just Plain Sound Great (with audio CD); Breathe: 101 Contemporary Odes; Under the Rock Umbrella: Contemporary American Poets from 1951-1977; and In a Fine Frenzy Rolling. He has work currently appearing in AGNI, Double Take, Hotel Amerika, Virginia Quarterly Review, and The Writer’s Chronicle. His new poetry textbook, Writing Poetry: Creative and Critical Approaches was published in 2009. He teaches at the University of West Georgia.

It will be held on December 11th at 7pm at the Gordonston cottage. A secluded cottage on a wooded acreage with a roaring fire in the fireplace! Bring up to three of your own poems, or your favorites of others, to share with everyone! Refreshments and snacks will be provided but if you have a dish you'd like to share please feel free. So mark it on your calendar for an evening of good friends, good food and great poems.
